Festivals are an important part of Bhutanese culture and tradition. The Tshechu is the most well-known Bhutanese festival. This festival is one of the largest tourist attractions in Bhutan.

Tshechu is the tenth day in Bhutanese calendar. These festivals are celebrated in the courtyards of the Dzongs (fortresses) in all the dzongkhags (districts). The Tshechu is held in honour of Guru Rinpochhe, who brought Mahayana Buddhism to Bhutan in the eighth century. Bhutanese legend says that on the tenth calendar day the great Guru Rinpochhe transformed himself into different forms to subdue demons. This legend has a religious significance to the Bhutanese people.

The Tshechu is celebrated with traditional dances and commences with wangs, blessings by lamas, and mewangs, blessings by fire. The Bhutanese believe that the festivals and wangs wash away their sins.

Bhutanese festivals are elaborate celebrations where attendants dress in their finest clothing and jewelry. In addition to the religious implications, the festivals serve as a community gathering where Bhutanese come to socalize and feast on native delicacies.
